Compulsory Subjects
English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities (MESH subjects) are core subjects at Kinross College with students attending four sessions per week.
These MESH subjects are delivered at the year level of students according to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) Western Australian Curriculum, with differentiation and support in place to meet the needs of students.
Literacy and Numeracy support classes will run for selected students, based on NAPLAN and other standardised testing results, and will be conducted with a view to enhancing students’ chances of achieving a passing result (“high strong category”) in Year 9 NAPLAN if possible, or Category 3 in OLNA testing before the end of Year 12. This is part of WACE achievement.
Students also study Health Education and Physical Education for one and two sessions per week respectively. Health covers a range of topics including the health and well-being issues related to adolescence, and the importance of positive relationships. A range of movement skills are developed through a number of modules, including a variety of sports in Physical Education.
In Year 10 students may choose a Physical Education Elective in place of a core unit.
Arts

This program is a year-long course and is recommended for the dedicated art student who is passionate about their work and intends to complete General or ATAR Art in Years 11 and 12. Students will learn an extensive range of Art skills and techniques and demonstrate these in unique and imaginative ways, such as designing original characters, painting skateboard decks, creating 3D models and exploring digital art. In this program, students will be inspired by new artistic skills and experiences.
Students will have the opportunity to take an in-depth look into the art industry with guest speakers and workshops from Perth-based artists who specialise in multiple streams ranging from University Visual Arts students to tattoo artists and professional cartoonists and animators. The Art extension program looks at Visual Arts in the wider community, taking students on excursions to various museums, the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) and Perth Zoo to show students how important creativity and art are.

The Year 10 Physical Education Program is designed for students who want to expand and refine their physical skills while participating in a range of engaging sports and activities. This Sport Science course offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the various aspects of sport science and how they can be applied to improve performance in sports and exercise. Students will gain a broad understanding of the key concepts in anatomy and physiology, energy systems, fitness testing and training, training principles and methods, nutrition for sport and exercise, biomechanics, recovery strategies and injury management. Course time will be divided into 50% practical and 50% theory.
This course is designed for those who are considering studying ATAR Physical Education Studies in Yr11 and 12 or strive to achieve a high grade in General Physical Education Studies, or wish to work in the Sports or Health Industry.

Marine Studies is the scientific study of the ocean. This course combines theoretical and practical knowledge to extend and enrich students understanding and passion for the marine environment. In this practical course students are exposed to fundamental processes of designing and producing projects using a variety of materials, skills and techniques commonly used in the woodworking industry.
Students will be given the opportunity to create woodwork designs and refine the use a range of hand skills and machining operations (including a computer numerically controlled CNC machines). They will use these skills in the construction processes and finishing techniques as they address design problems in a Woodwork context. Students will be required to develop a design brief around their major wood project.

Project Design and Construction will prepare students with the skills and knowledge to work in the building and construction trades. Mechatronics introduces students to linear programming and electrical circuit design. The course utilises the Arduino Uno electronic boards and the Sparkfun Inventors Kit as a course structure developed in Italy. Students will use their laptops to write linear programs with the Arduino software. This software script will program the Arduino Uno motherboard and subsequent electrical componentry to complete design solutions in automation. Future employment will have a major componentry of automation.

This is an exciting course that will provide students with the knowledge to develop their fashion and design skills. There will be a strong focus on recycling, innovation and problem solving. In this course students will have the opportunity to investigate current fashion trends and improve their sewing skills to make their own fun and stylish bucket hat and pencil skirt.
Students will explore the traditional dress of cultures from around the globe, as well as the properties, performance and use of textiles in fashion design. Their skills are displayed in a portfolio of different machine and hand-sewing techniques. Students apply these techniques to design and construct a variety of creative garments and textile products.

Make the most of your physical, social and emotional self through learning the fundamentals when working in the beauty industry! This subject covers how to best care for you skin and body. Students learn and refine make- up application, determine the techniques required for the perfect manicure and achieving salon results when managing hair.
Understanding the importance of salon etiquette and hygiene is pivotal when working in the beauty industry, therefore a focus is placed on this. Students make appointments and determine how crucial retail and point of sale are within this business. Students also learn how to write a resume to become a successful job applicant. Guest speakers from within the industry highlight this course.

This is a practical course designed for students wanting to pursue a career in any area whereby children are the focus. Students will learn about child development from pre- conception through to the Pre School child. Students participate in the Real Care Baby programme and prepare meals for the fussy toddler.
Students develop a portfolio of researched topics and use the design process to create a baby keepsake as well as plan a children’s party. This course includes guest speakers and culminates with an excursion to Kidsafe as well as Ivy Watson Playground to understand child development in an authentic atmosphere and give the students a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of parenting.

This exciting course focuses on developing food preparation skills whilst working with formal and informal menus. Students explore delicious contemporary café cuisines from entrees to main courses and desserts. They will also look at the importance of food presentation, use of technologies in the culinary world and food sustainability, whilst developing everyday living skills to become independent young adults. It is a requirement of this elective, that students are expected to work to industry standards and to provide quality food products for a number of school functions. They also will have hands on experience with a commercial coffee machine, developing their barista skills in a café situation, as part of the Barista Certificate Component within this subject.
This course provides a sound grounding to a variety of traineeships and further education in the hospitality industry. Students are required to complete both theory and practical aspects of this course.

Music Academy is a year-long, audition-based elective that involves practical workshops, performances and theory surrounding the elements of music. This subject is aimed at students who have experience in playing an instrument or singing and wish to pursue their interests and further develop and improve their skills. This subject aims to prepare students to study Music in Year 11 and 12.
Students will be provided with a range of opportunities that will allow them to master their skills and knowledge in both in their ensembles and instrumentals. Students will also be involved in developing in areas such as stage and equipment set up, recording and public performance opportunities, and performance excursions and incursions. Mentoring opportunities to Year 7 Music students will also be available. Each student will be required to attend their instrumental lessons and ensemble sessions each week.

Dance Academy is a year-long course for students with dance experience and passion who want further enrichment in technique and performance skills. This course offers practical workshops, performance opportunities and theory, focussing on HipHop, Contemporary and Bollywood.
Students will be immersed in dance production, covering design elements, the elements of dance and choreographic devices, building the skills required to respond to and produce choreography. Students will have the opportunity to participate in three performance events throughout the year: a primary school tour, a student choreography night, and a final showcase at the end of Term 4, showcasing the three dances they learn throughout the year.

The elite Soccer Program offers students development of both technical and physical ability within the world game. This program is a year-long program, and students will have two (2) lessons a week within their timetable, with a probable out of school hours session. Lessons will be mostly practical with some theory lessons throughout the year. The program is tailored around the philosophies of the Football Federation Australia (FFA) Curriculum and has been designed accordingly to enhance students technical, physical, mental, and overall game knowledge of the sport.
The program includes:
- Competing in the WA State School Championship Soccer Tournament. These games will be played after school hours during Term 2 or 3.
- Strength and Conditioning High-Performance Program – delivered by 2 Halfs Football Development.

Academic Extension education at Kinross College will enable children with higher level academic ability to engage and flourish in a learning environment that is intellectually stimulating and rigorous. Learning programs are flexible and tailored to accelerate, extend and enrich the learning for each student within the program. Classroom environments that are creative, promote divergent and higher-order thinking, as well as deliver an open-ended approach to learning, will foster the continued emergence of students’ gifts and talents.
Over the course of the KEA program, students are exposed to a variety of extra-curricular and extension opportunities. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS INTO KEA
A selective entrance test is held in Year 6. Some students may enter the program in later years based on data and available places.
Students may be offered a placement in Maths and Science, or English and Humanities and Social Sciences, or all subjects within the KEA Program.
The indicative cost of the KEA program is $35 per subject ($140 all 4 subjects) for each of the KEA subjects that a student studies.

The Gold Pen Competition is a writing competition that is part of the Scribbler’s Festival that will be held in October. In the lead up, there is a chance for students to enter this competition. You will need to write – a short story, a poem, song lyrics, cartoon or comic, graphic novel or a picture book. The theme of your work needs to revolve around the theme of Rebels and Dreamers. There are prizes for the three shortlisted entrants including a $100 book voucher from Boffin Books. The overall winner will receive a variety of prizes including $500 cash.

Accompanied by three teachers, a group of 10 students will travel to Auckland, New Zealand for a 7-day tour during April 2027. The 2026 program gives students the opportunity to explore the Anzac legacy and the contributions of those who served in the armed forces in all wars. As well as to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the end of World War I, the 82nd anniversary of the end of World War II, and participate in an Anzac Day service. This annual competition is open to all Western Australian students in Years 8 to 11. Students from public and private schools across the state can submit entries for the chance to be selected for this prestigious experience. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AT KINROSS COLLEGE
Kinross College proudly partners with the Instrumental Music School Services to offer a high-quality instrumental music program for our students in Years 7 to 12.
Students are selected through a musical aptitude assessment and other criteria. If your child is chosen, they will receive free instrumental music lessons and have a chance to participate in engaging music activities that support their growth and activity.
Teachers from Instrumental Music School Services are highly qualified professionals with university degrees in music performance and education. They are also registered with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia, ensuring expert instruction and support.
Classes are usually 30 minutes long but may vary depending on the instrument or level of study. Students are prepared with their instruments and make sure that they attend on time. As they are only a few students in each year in the in the music program, the class times will be at a time other students are attending normal class schedule. Your child needs to ensure they keep up with any work they miss.

COURSE OUTLINE
The Police Ranger program offered at Kinross College, in conjunction with Cadets WA, offers students in Years 8-12 amazing opportunities to develop an array of self-management, interpersonal and outdoor skills, along with knowledge of the WA Police Force.
The program has a strong focus on leadership development and allows students to forge friendships and build confidence and resiliency, while maintaining respect and discipline within a ranking system. Our partnerships with Cadets WA and the Department of Communities allows us to offer this program at a heavily subsidised cost.
A wide range of programs are offered within Parade times that not only provide opportunity for Rangers to demonstrate the required competencies, but also engage in fun/active learning experiences relevant to their local community and available facilities.
As a pre-requisite of entrance into the Kinross Police Ranger Cadets program, students need to attend Kinross College. Once in the program, students will have the option to continue in the program when attending Upper School.
All camps foster team building and leadership.
Rangers also have access to apply formal drill and ceremonial procedures through their involvement in ANZAC assemblies and parades, along with the annual Police Ranger Open Day and the State Ranger Rally.
All Rangers participate in formal training such as Essential and Senior First Aid courses, Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue qualifications, to build their capacity to identify and manage risks and become actively contributing members of the broader community.
Kinross Police Rangers also have access to international programs such as World Challenge, a month-long expedition to a less developed country designed to challenge students physically, personally, and socially.
Rangers are recognised for their achievement of competencies, and for demonstrating excellence in leadership, through a formal Graduation Ceremony at the end of the year where many Rangers achieve promotion to the next rank. All instructors and students within the unit abide by the Ranger Oath and Code of Conduct demonstrating respect and service to others. Students in the Ranger program consistently develop and model skills, attitudes and values that have a positive impact on their schooling as well as their social interactions.
As a pre-requisite of entrance into the Kinross Police Ranger Cadets program, students need to attend Kinross College. Once in the program, students will have the option to continue in the program when attending Upper School.
Rangers meet every Wednesday at 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm from Week 5 in Term 1 of each year and continues until the Rangers graduation ceremony at the end of year.
Students can be credited with two units towards achieving their WACE.

KINROSS COLLEGE AND THE KEA PROGRAM
Participation in WADL aligns with the goals of our KEA Program, which focuses on academic enrichment and personal development. Costs for WADL are subsidised by the KEA program, making this opportunity accessible to eligible students.

DEBATE FORMAT AND TOPICS
Students compete in structured rounds, including prepared and impromptu debates.

Should a Kinross College team qualify for the finals, students must maintain good standing to participate. If good standing is lost prior to the event, their invitation may be revoked.

WHAT IS THE WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP?
The World Scholar’s Cup brings together students from diverse backgrounds to engage in a unique academic experience. It’s not about memorising facts—it’s about applying knowledge, debating ideas, and connecting concepts across disciplines. Students explore six subject areas through four exciting team events:
- Scholar’s Bowl – Fast-paced multimedia quiz challenges.
- Collaborative Writing – Creative and persuasive writing based on themed prompts.
- Scholar’s Challenge – A multiple-choice test with a twist: multiple answers allowed!
- Team Debate – Engaging debates on thought-provoking motions.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS: THE PERTH ROUND
The Perth Round is our local entry point into the WSC. Many students participate in this round, gaining valuable experience and forming lasting friendships. Those who qualify may advance to a Global Round, where they’ll compete with scholars from around the world.
GOING GLOBAL: KUALA LUMPUR 2025
In 2025, Kinross College plans to attend the Global Round in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in partnership with Kelmscott Senior High School. This international experience includes travel, cultural exchange, and unforgettable academic challenges.
THE GRAND FINALE: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS AT YALE
Students who qualify at a Global Round may be invited to the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University, USA, held in November. - Debate Showcase – Mixed teams of top speakers debate in front of the community.
- Scholar’s Show – A talent show celebrating creativity and courage.
- Scholar’s Scavenge – A quirky city-wide challenge with new international teammates (Global Round).
- Scholar’s Fair – A cultural celebration with food, performances, and traditions from around the world (Global Round).
