Student Emotional Health and Well-being

Support of students’ social, emotional health and wellbeing is ensured by providing a safe and supportive environment. Teachers as mentors, TAG Teachers, are allocated a group of students (TAG Class). TAG Teachers foster mutual respect and fairness through values education. Creating a sense of belonging and connectedness to our school community is embraced by supporting our students with social and emotional well-being support. TAG teachers have to opportunity to check in with their students on a daily basis, set goals with them, offer advice and direction and build positive, supportive relationships.  We expect our students to be free from all forms of bullying and harassment. We actively encourage compassion, tolerance and consideration for each other. Our approach to bullying is shared problem-solving, focusing on empowerment and developing awareness of their own rights, as well as their responsibility to respect the rights of others.

Additional Support where needed

The Student Services team offers additional support through one-on-one counselling, assisting with goal setting, exploring future options, and offering social and emotional guidance and providing career information and learning support. Our students can talk through issues and concerns with their TAG Teacher, the Student Services Manager, their RISE Coordinator, the Chaplain, the nurse or the College Psychologist where required. Our purpose-bulit Student Services building, has several facilities available for our students including: the RISE Co Lounge, a student courtyard, ICT facilities, SEQTA Kiosk (for signing in and out), sick bay, Nurse’s Station, and the offices of the Student Services Managers, nurse, psychologist and chaplain. the College Psychologist, Nurse or Chaplain. Our community links also provide the opportunity of involvement in a range of mentoring programs. Some examples are Shine for girls and Strength for boys, which focus on supporting adolescents’ needs.

The Community Health Nurse

The Nurse primarily assists in health education and health promotion strategies at the College. The Nurse is accessible to students who may be seeking assistance with adolescent psychosocial and physical health issues that may arise. The College works in partnership with the Community Health Nurse to develop a coherent and coordinated approach to address the health needs of students.

The School Chaplain and Therapy Dog

Our Chaplain, Sally, and her fully trained and accredited Therapy dog, Camembert ‘Bear’, are here to talk to students if they need support and guidance. The chaplain is also happy to talk to parents who would like support or advice. Email Sally at: sally.messenger@education.wa.edu.au.
